I’ve decided to start participating in Booking Through Thursday, which is billed as “a weekly meme about (mostly) books and reading.” Today’s question is:

Whether you usually read off of your own book pile or from the libraryshelves NOW, chances are you started off with trips to the library.(There’s no way my parents could otherwise have kept up with my bookhabit when I was 10.) So … What is your earliest memory of a library? Who took you? Do you have you any funny/odd memories of the library?

I have a few memories of libraries from when I was young. I remember loving the Cerritos Public Library as a kid. Their kids area was down the hall from the rest of the stacks, and it was really kid-friendly. If I remember correctly, they had a fantasy theme, with castles and dragons. I think the bookshelves were the walls of the castle, and for some reason, I think the towers actually had phones. I don’t remember whether they were functional or not, but I think there were phones.

We also went to the Lakewood branches of the Los Angeles County Public Library. The Iacoboni branch was bigger, and we didn’t go too often, but they had great selection. I spent a lot more time at the Nye branch, which was in the Boyar park, where my brother had football practice. While my parents were watching him practice, I’d go sit in the library to do homework. Most of the time, though, I ended up wandering the stacks and read Sweet Valley and Babysitters Club books instead of doing my homework. When the library would close for the night, I’d go sit and watch practice, too.

I also have some memories of the school library. I went to a small private school, and, as is the case with most school libraries, we were only allowed to check out one or two books. The librarian, who was also a lunch aide, knew how much and how quickly I read, so she would show me the older books while my classmates were still struggling with picture books, and if I remember correctly, I was allowed to take more books. My mom was a teacher there my final two years, so I seem to remember being allowed to get new books after school.

I don’t remember too much about my childhood, but I do seem to remember a bit about libraries. They were a pretty important part of my childhood.
