Which is worse?

Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author, or

Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

I think it’s worse to find a book I love, but then hate everything else by that author. When I find books I love, I tend to acquire other books by that author quickly and with an astonishing amount of tenacity (I’m a book hoarder; what can I say?). To be disappointed in one book is one thing; to be disappointed with nearly an entire canon by that author is another thing entirely. I’m sad that the author seems to have lost the magic that initially drew me to them, but at the same time, I feel like I’ve wasted time investing in these other books by the author.

When an author has one disappointing book in an otherwise exemplary body of work, I don’t really feel like I’ve wasted my time or been let down. Sure, there is an initial feeling of disappointment, but it’s a disappointment I can live with.
